Grand Slam Journey- A Quest From The Heart11 min read
Grand Slam Goals
Some women dream of diamonds, some of elaborate weddings and high heels…..All I dream about is hunting. One dream that replays for me often…the completion of a Grand Slam
While many know what this means, some may not. I don’t have the rule book in my head and there are levels past a Grand Slam but you have to start somewhere right?
Here is a trusted source of information and best way to break down what a Grand Slam in the world of turkey hunting. According to the NWTF ( Which I am a proud member of )
It is strange to find myself seeking this task in turkey hunting, being a more invested deer hunter.
None the less, I have had thoughts of a Grand Slam far back to last year when I got my first Eastern wild turkey here at home. With the start of the 2018 turkey season, I was already speaking on planning to snag the remaining 3 subspecies in the 2019 season. With unknown plans of heading to Africa this fall for a 7 day hunt with Quality hunting Safaris Namibia as a team member of International Huntress, I needed to be mindful of my spending. Although this hunt would be free, airfare and such is not. With this in mind I was ready to be prepared in case I was chosen for the trip and save my money for the travel expenses.
Don’t I look seriou and in deep thought maybe? Nah, I was wondering how deer got to water that low for some reason.
With this in mind I have been neck-deep turkey hunting here at home and still have a few weeks left. Although right now for 2018 I have not harvested a wild turkey this season. Still very new to turkey hunting, yet I enjoy the different type of hunt they offer. Unlike deer, the wild turkey have eye sight that would blow the minds of many. Locating by sound and the various species are in fact a different hunt respectably.
Wondering where these subspecies live? I used charts like this to learn myself.
Fast Forward to a few weeks ago and my plans changed a little thanks to the efforts of some newly introduced friends made through social networking in the hunting community.
Kirby & April here at the ATA Show have quickly become a couple I just adore and happy to have connected with( That’s them hugging up on Jim Shocky- Don’t blame them :)) We had initially been in contact about various hunting game calls and look to hear more about that development and product roll out towards the end of the year. Low and behold the stars lined up and an opportunity of great surprise fell in my lap! Next week I will be leaving for Oklahoma to not only turkey hunt, but hunt a Rio Grande! Just a reminder! That is a different subspecies than my eastern and would in fact mark off #2 on my Grand Slam Quest!! To add to the excitement to have an opportunity of a double is even more fun! With the season half way done and time ticking, it is next to impossible to score a reputable outfitter and guide this time of year! So you can image my excitement when I got the call that sealed the deal with King’s Outfitter’s based in Oklahoma!
You can find King’s Outfitter’s on social media with the links above, or learn more on the website.
Cody King, owner of King’s Outfitter’s has come with high recommendations! Many , many great reviews and people going out of their way to say how this outfitter is a high quality hunter. Big thanks also to Cody as the season is tight and the available spots are next to none. I am looking forward to not only putting boots on the ground and claiming another state and marking off another subspecies but the opportunity to learn a little more. I bet Cody has some things to teach a newbie about turkey hunting. I’m always happy to be a student hunter.
If there is one thing I can’t stress enough if you are new to hunting, it’s this… Be cautious! Without huge amounts of details, I will say this. Don’t think everyone who offers you a hunt is always out for your best interest. Now not to say many aren’t! I have personally experienced great issue once last due to this and it will never happen again. Be cautious of who you trust in the woods and remember most people will hold your head under water if it means they get just 5 more seconds of air. Not everyone holds true to the same morals and level of respect as you and I may. Be mindful of your own reputation when considering who you trust and who you call “friend” also. This can be said about many things in life of course. In todays time most people unfortunately are quick to listen yet slow to question. Anyone can make up and spin tales to harm and hurt in hopes of helping their own situation. Don’t let this be a hurdle you have to cross if you are new to hunting. Check your facts, look into who you plan to hunt with and it’s never a bad thing to be extra cautious! Due to this experience, I was so relieved to see the outpouring of people who all said one things really, Cody was King of the hunt! Trusted, honest and reliable to do all it took to have the most succesful hunt possible.
You live a lot and a you learn a little along the way. Be thankful for opportunities you have and hopeful for the ones you want in the future. I will be out-of-town this weekend to do some RZR off-road fun with our club crew. Coming home on Sunday, packed and heading out on Monday to Oklahoma in hopes of a stellar experience and new adventures! Y’all wish me luck and safe travels and tell Kirby, April and Cody of King’s Outfitter’s thanks for taking care of my turkey hunting goals and making me one step closer to my Grand Slam! I hope to start in Florida out of the gate next year after a Osceola ( the swamp gobbler) then back west for a shot at a Merriam. It won’t be a single season completion, but there is always next time 🙂 Never stop dreaming, never stop setting goals, no matter how silly or maybe out of reach they may seem! You can do what you set your mind to my friend! Believe it! Let’s just hope I don’t drop the ball out west and can be successful in my humble hunt from the heart!
